Suomi is the Finnish word for Finland.

There are 5 million people in Finland – less than in New York City, but as many as in Maryland.

Finland is a large area in Northern Europe. It is as big as the state of Montana. In Finland, the sea is close and there are two hundred thousand lakes and lots of forests.

Animals
Finnish animals, such as bears, foxes, lynxes, moose and hare roam the Finnish forests. Rudolph the Reindeer’s cousins live in Northern Finland, also known as Lapland. And does Rudolph have many cousins - 200,000 in total!

Climate
There are four different seasons in Finland. Especially in Lapland there is lots of snow during the winter. In the winter children like to go sledding. When summer comes, Finnish people go to their summer cottages. The cottages are usually by a lake and children get to play in the water.

Sauna
After a cool swim in the lake, Finns like to warm up in sauna, a hot room heated with wood. Finns like sauna so much that they have built 2,5 million of them! There are saunas even in private apartments. Wouldn’t you like to experience the heat of sauna, too?
