Do you know this strong little girl?
Welcome to Sweden and Astrid Lindgren's World!
Astrid Lindgren was born in 1907 in the small town of Vimmerby in Småland. Many people emigrated to America from this part of southern Sweden in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, to seek a new life and a better future. Astrid’s parents Samuel August and Hanna Ericsson chose to stay in Småland, where they rented a rectory. Astrid grew up on the small estate with her three siblings. Her childhood was rich in love and in experience, and it would later inspire many of her stories.Today Astrid Lindgren is the world’s most widely read children’s book author. She lives on in Vimmerby in the shape of Astrid Lindgren’s World, which is now one of Sweden’s best-known theme parks with almost half a million visitors a year.

A trip to Astrid Lindgren’s World is like walking straight into one of her many popular stories. There is Villekulla Cottage, the big yellow house where Pippi Longstocking lives. A short walk away is Katthult farm, where Emil and his family live. Close by, on the roofs of Vasastan, Karlsson-on-the-Roof flies around ‘tirritating’ people. Also in the park are Ronja the Robber’s Daughter at Matt’s Fort, the Brothers Lionheart in Cherry Tree Valley and Mardie in Junedale. The settings in the park are well made and fascinating: The Tiny, Tiny Town is a miniature copy of Vimmerby as it looked when Astrid Lindgren was a child, and anyone walking along Troublemaker Street is on the actual site where the Lotta films were shot.

Astrid Lindgren’s World is Sweden’s biggest summer theatre, and everything that is and everything that happens in the park is based on the stories of Astrid Lindgren. Children watching a performance enjoy a wonderful and realistic experience, as it all happens just a few metres away

Between performances, children are welcome to say hello to the characters and play with them in their settings.
There is also theatre on the two large scenes at Astrid Lindgren’s World, focusing heavily on singing and dancing.
Astrid Lindgren’s World is not a conventional theme park with attractions based on machines, but a theatre park where the performers – adults and children alike – meet visitors and invite them into the fairy-tale world Astrid Lindgren devoted several decades and many books to building up.
At Astrid Lindgren’s World children can be children – and fairy-tales come to life.

Vimmerby is situated about 300 km from Stockholm and Gothenburg and 420 km from Copenhagen.
